Why Portion Control is Important for Pets
Who loves their pets as much as we do? At Animal Clinic of Verona we are here to help you take care of your pet in the best way possible which is why we would like to take the time to talk about PET OBESITY. Pet obesity is on the rise, in fact, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), 58 percent of cats and 53 percent of dogs in the U.S. were overweight in 2014! So what can you do about it? Use portion control and give your pet a healthy balanced lifestyle!
Here are things that you can do to keep your pet healthy:
EXERCISE: even indoor pets need ample exercise! While we may be tired at the end of the day it is important to play with your pets. Whether it is throwing a ball to your dog or having your cat chase a cat toy it is important that they exercise every day. Note: if your pet is obese excessive exercise could cause harm. Take small steps.
PORTION CONTROL: Read the packaging and watch treats. If you need help understanding how much to give your pet just ask us! As for treats it is wise to keep them at a minimum.
PET OWNER KNOWLEDGE: Understand your pet. Each breed has different dietary needs. You wouldn’t feed a pug the same amount as a Great Dane. Have questions? Don’t hesitate to ask!
Pet obesity will create health problems in your pet and can reduce their life expectancy. Why does this matter?
Pets that weight 15% or more over the suggested weight range for their breed and age is classified as obese
Health problems riddle obese pets. These can include: high blood pressure, diabetes, joint pain, shortness of breath, osteoarthritis, and more!
Life expectancy is cut short. Our pets bodies are not meant to be riddled with fat. The fat weighs on their internal organs and bone structure. Cats and dogs are meant to be lean and healthy!
Caring for your pet is your responsibility but together we can come up with a weight management and exercise plan that will help your pet become healthy! Come see us at Animal Clinic of Verona to discuss your options!
