Halloween Safety Tips for Pets
Halloween is a fun time of year for the whole family! From treats, to costumes, parties and more it is a time where the ghoulish and the grand come out to play. But that doesn’t mean your pet should celebrate the same way you do. Our pets are our family which means we need to keep them safe! Here are a list of safety tips for your family pet:
Pet Costumes: The sizes for pet costumes can be deceiving. To ensure a proper fit and have your dog or cat try on the costume before Halloween. NOTE: while you may think dressing your pet up for Halloween is fun they may not! Only dress your pet up if they are willing.
Trick-or-treaters: Do you like having your pet with you to give out candy? Ensure your dog doesn’t get lost during the commotion by having them on a leash. On the contrary if the amount of activity is going to cause your pet anxiety keep them in a confined area such as a crate or a bedroom with a closed door. Only 1 in 3 pets return home after being lost. TIP: Ensure your pet's safety by keeping them indoors while trick or treaters are about
Candy: Sugar and chocolate do not mix for our furry friends! These are temptations for our pets. Keep them out of reach!
Decorations: When it comes to your decorations there are a few things that raise concerns:
Pumpkins and gourds: Some pets find pumpkins and gourds delicious and will eat them. While generally nontoxic it can give your pet an upset tummy. Make sure to monitor them while you are carving pumpkins!
Jack-o-lanterns: Beware of fire! Pets can cause your Jack-o-lanterns to topple over causing fire. In addition a curious pet could get burned. Try to keep them away from open flames. TIP: Buy the battery powered “fake” candles. Not only are they safer they are reusable!
Wires, and electrical cords: Many Halloween decorations need to have electricity to work and we all know of the cats and dogs that have chewed on wires. Monitor your pet around these items.
Mischief night and other worries: Unfortunately not all Halloween tricks are funny! It is important to note that pets can be at risk leading up to and after Halloween (especially black cats). Protect your pets and keep them indoors for Mischief night!
